When entrepreneurs decide to take their business dreams online, they tend to make a lot of common web content mistakes because websites built for visitors and the type of technology visitors use to interact with you is entirely different from networking offline and making sales calls.

Even when entrepreneurs have a seasoned online business, they still fall back on old bad habits that won’t help their online presence continue to grow. I know this all-too-well myself.

Today, my focus is to help you to avoid the common mistakes many online businesses make with their websites and social media accounts.

I know. You think you know what your website visitor wants, but if I were to sit you down and ask you the following questions, could you answer them with certainty?

• Describe your ideal visitor:

1. What is his/her age? No range. The age–period.
2. Sex? Not both.
3. The number of children? Their ages? Their sexes?
4. College educated … or not?
5. Entrepreneurial?
6. Scared? About what?
7. Happy? About what?
8. Depressed? About what?
9. Height and weight?
10. Eye color? No, I am not kidding.
11. Work?
12. Bad habits?
13. Sleeping habits?
14. Driving habits?
15. Computer habits?
16. Cell phone habits?
17. Dine out or in?
18. He/she lives where?
19. Disposable income?
20. Married? Single? Divorced? Widowed?
21. Conservative? Liberal?
22. Spiritual or atheist?

You must be able to answer these questions before you build your website, your Pinterest Page or create a landing page for your product idea. It will make all of your content publishing decisions more natural. Instead of trying to communicate to a mass visitor-base, you should use these questions to create an image of a real client, so when you do communicate online, you are talking directly to this one person, as if you were sitting in a restaurant chatting one-on-one.

I’ve had people tell me their web content is for written women over 55, yet they use some dark distracting background and font the size only an 18-year-old can read with images of 20-something women then wonder why the perfect visitor isn’t interacting with their web content.

Do you know who you are speaking to?

What search terms will your perfect visitor use to find you? Will visitors use Google? Bing? DuckDuckGo? Facebook? Twitter? Pinterest? Reddit? Buzzfeed? Will your business name and domain name work in all these places?

I love Auto Body shops. They tend to call themselves names like Franks Auto Body Repair, Joe’s Best Auto Repair, Precision Auto Repair, etc. There is no question when you read their logo what they can do for you. Why not call one of their websites: www.(name-of-city)bestautorepair.com? How many people use the term “best auto repair” along with the city when they search? How easy it would be to find them.

Naming your bike riding tips website “belle.com” before you’ve built an established brand under that name won’t bring you the same traffic as bestbiketips.com.

Simplify Your Website With The KISS Rule

When you start your online venture, no one is going to be searching for ‘Belle’, unless you have a large and very loyal client-base who knows you by that name. But in using just that name, you will miss the opportunity of getting that first shot at a new visitor looking for badass bike tips. Your tribe may never find your website because the domain name doesn’t resonate with how your visitor searches online. The same goes for Facebook, or anywhere your visitor hangs out and seeks out information. Do you realize there over 1 billion websites?

Please name your website something the world can spell so they can find you in search and your website name is already selling for you before anyone clicks on your link in search. Leave the complicated names for naming your pets.

Once you’ve figured out how these people will be searching for you –by a city, by a particular name, by a product, or by a service, and then not using this information every time you place content online is a sin. I can tell you with certainty that someone else is doing this and getting your visitors.

Nothing drives me crazier than to see a title online that says, “How To Grow ‘Petunia’ in 48 Hours” and the word ‘petunia’ is not used in the opening sentence of the content. The accompanying article image isn’t a flower. The image is a dog. The story ends up being about a girl named Petunia who grows up in 48 hours due to a life-changing event. What?

When your visitor uses their 4 seconds of their attention span to glance at your story, will they see what they came for, or will they leave because it looked like you were talking about pajamas and dogs? Your potential visitor is not reading a book and walking the halls of the library looking for your best-selling items, so show them some kindness and tell them again why they are there. Get to your point in the first three sentences to remind them why they stopped by.

Because your post is what your title told them it would be–right?

I wish I had a dime for every entrepreneur who thought they had the most fantastic idea or story to tell and trusted that just putting it on the Internet would change their lives forever. On the Internet, there isn’t such a thing as street traffic or window shoppers randomly passing by your amazing article because you “pushed it live.”

Running a website requires real work, and you must promote your work every single day–both online and offline.

You must discover where your potential visitors hang out online and engage with them there in a supportive way to encourage them to visit your website to get more (where there is hopefully more) of beautiful you, your products or your service.

Where they hangout may mean your presence on Facebook, too. Or Twitter. Pinterest. Get over it.

Would people at a party stand there and listen to you tell this story? At this length? With that opening?

Some businesses want to dump their feelings about their love of something on to their visitor without realizing the visitor doesn’t care–no matter how great they believe their product or service might be. If you are a business owner reading this who thinks you’ve never made this mistake, then you are the worst kind of online contributor: one who doesn’t question your web content all of the time.

I’ll quote Seth Godin here, “When you are busy telling stories to people who want to hear them, you’ll be tempted to tell stories that just don’t hold up.”

You must define a topic for your website, just like you must decide on a USP for a business. A USP is your unique selling proposition. Having one sets you and your blog apart from your competition.

The most successful websites have a well-defined niche with a target demographic in mind.

Starting out talking about swimming, then switching to candle-making, and later discussing your fear of flying will only confuse your readers. You won’t develop a following. And you have to watch that this isn’t a sign that you quit things too quickly before they’ve had a chance to develop, or it’s another way you set yourself up to fail.

You also won’t be able to link your blog posts together to form a cohesive story-line. Your story-line matters to search engines and your readers even if it doesn’t matter to you.

Don’t be one of those people who has a website where you are a “Life coach/graphic designer/make-up artist/author/part-time chef.”

Choose One! Uno. PERIOD.

You can create 5 websites targeted to each of your passions and link them to each other, but stick with just one niche on each site.

And make sure the specialty you chose is something you have a real interest in promoting. Managing more than one website is a pain, but you’ll quickly find out which pursuit you’re most interested in sharing. For your website to become a success you will need to be able to regularly update and promote your web content. You will need to live it every day. You need to pick something that you are willing to work at for at least 3 years.

Building a successful online presence takes time. It can be an agonizingly slow process. Every successful blogger and online business owner knows about the 3-month itch–the point at which you run out of things to say about your project and you become bored with your chosen niche. You grow tired of updating your Facebook Page, your website content, your Google Business Page, Instagram photos, and your Twitter feed.

You thought it was going to be easier.

It’s okay only to update your web content once a week. Just know that your site won’t grow as fast as others, but it is better to have a schedule and stick to it, then to only update your content twice a year.

But understand that there will be times that you hate all the time you spend online promoting your big dream. When this happens try looking for inspiration in a new place. Try looking at your dream business from a different perspective.

Ignoring your visitor interactions is the same as not responding to emails or phone calls about your topic/product or service. You should visit other blogs and websites where your perfect visitor hangs out and engage with them in a real (non-selling) way.

Responding back in your comment section and interacting with visitors to your social media sites and gently responding to reviews is a sign that you are a professional and you value what you offer. You don’t have to comment on every single interaction on your social media pages, but showing up to comment once in a while says you are not a poser.

Answer questions online. Help other people solve problems. Help another struggling website by being the first to comment on a post they’ve written.

Treat people online the way you’d like people to respond to you.

Promote blogs, websites, writers, entrepreneurs who compliment your niche and who are just starting.

Reading popular social media pages, their comment sections and online reviews in your niche helps you understand your target audience and gain new perspectives on what you could be doing wrong. Another way online businesses blow their interactions with visitors is to have people jump through registration hoops to interact. Don’t put up an extra wall between you and your visitors.

Visitors have the right to voice their opinions–even if you don’t like what they have to say. Negative reviews can give your business authenticity and a reason for a satisfied customer (who might not usually comment online) to speak up to defend your business. Be sure to respond with reverence–how you want a business owner to treat you if you are unhappy with a product or service.

And NEVER engage with people online in anger–ever.

Advertising genius, David Ogilvy once wrote that “5 times as many people read the headline as read the body.” Crafting a great page title or article headline may be the only chance you get to sell someone on clicking through to visit your website.

If you don’t stop potential visitors with your title, 99% of your time spent on your web content is a waste of time. The purpose of a headline is to get people to click-through and scan your page. From the title, they typically read only the first 120 characters of the first paragraph before they begin scanning the page.

Are you reaching out from the page and grabbing them by the throat? Does your title shout, “You must read this!” Is your keyword phrase included? Think about how you read and interact on the web. Do you think your visitor behaves differently? I like what author, Victor Urbach says about this topic:

“The only purpose of the first paragraph is to get them to read the second paragraph, and so on. A headline is an engine that pulls this train.”

Don’t make your titles so long so that it makes it impossible to tweet your post and share your article. Always count your headline and try to keep it under 70 characters. Make it easy for people to help promote you.

There are many valid reasons for building an email list, especially if you are planning product launches, but you should create one even if you’re not. Search engines and social media sites like Facebook change their practices all the time.

You do not want your web traffic entirely controlled by search engines or social media sites. Your email list belongs to you, and no algorithm change can affect your list. Your list should be more critical than your traffic. Having an email list offers you the opportunity to further interact with your readers by providing them something special that they won’t get by dropping by your site.

I don’t care if you are a freelance writer, you take lousy photos, and your phone camera is the worst–you need to add photo elements to your stories. People like to see images with content. But you don’t have to be a professional photographer to add stunning images to your content. There are quite a few top quality free image sites available.

Images, remember they are content too. You need to help search engines understand what they are about by correctly describing them. So also learn how to use Alt tags. Learn how to set your vertical and horizontal spacing, placement, linking, and the ability to open your images in a larger webpage if you want people to download and them. Create simple edges or borders around your images that don’t take away from your content.

My favorite image peeve is when someone uploads an image on to the Internet with a name of something like “4869874472000.jpg.” How on earth does this benefit anyone? If it is a picture of a sailboat name it “sailboat.jpg” before you upload it and place with your web content.

You need to learn and understand DPI to make sure your image content loads quickly for your visitors. Renaming the image from what your device named it is just one more step in the image optimization process.

What often sets a website apart is the quality, relevance, and placement for maximum impact.

Ever since we all saw the movie, Field of Dreams, entrepreneurs on the Internet, writers dreaming of publishing contracts and all manner of start-ups have imagined if they “build it” visitors “will magically come.” I don’t know what it is about putting up a website that makes people think Google will love it and index the content to page one of whatever glorious search term then visitors from all over the world will flock to see what you are all about. Within a month you are a millionaire.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Unless you are Madonna.

There are more than 14.3 trillion pages live on the Internet. Please read that again. The world is distracted. Why do you think if you build something online people will automatically flock to see it?

Are you remarkable? And when I say remarkable–I mean like Coen brothers’ movies remarkable?

⇒ Do your images take a viewers’ breath away?
⇒ Does your web content make grown men cry?
⇒ Do you get angry emails?
⇒ Are you scared when you hit the publish or post button?
⇒ Do you believe in something so passionately that you can’t sleep at night for wanting to work at it?
⇒ Does your web design or logo win awards?
⇒ Do you want it so badly that your stomach hurts? Does your passion shine through on your website and social media interactions?

How does a piece of art stand out in a museum; a house stands out on the street; a car attract your attention, or a beautiful woman (or man) catch your eye in a nightclub? It’s because something about the experience of seeing them is remarkable. It’s worth “remarking” or talking about to other people. Web content is no different.

The web universe is fair. There is no such thing as in overnight success. The world requires that you pay your dues and prove just how badly you want it. You will be tested at every turn. Don’t believe me? Then ask every successful online entrepreneur.

Roll up your sleeves and get a job that supports you while you are building your online reputation. Connect with a business network that will support you. Band together. You can rise faster if you connect with a top online marketing mentor or a group of entrepreneurs working their way to the top.

Also always have a backup plan, a plan B, and an emergency exit plan for everything you are doing online.

That’s why I know so much about them. Do I still make some of these very mistakes on my websites? Yes, sometimes I do, especially when I am exhausted.

One of the most critical factors in business is that you look at the realities of your situation–not what you wish it to be–and make decisions based on those facts. It may make running a business a little less glamorous, but I promise you that it will make your entrepreneurial journey more realistic and more likely to succeed.

Whenever I travel, I’m still amazed to find businesses listed in Google who do not have a website. The owners rely on a Google local listing, a Yelp listing, or a Facebook Page for their Internet presence. Many small business owners still believe that managing a website is difficult and too much to learn and manage.

But really, it’s never been easier to set up a professional-looking business website or blog.

Most all hosting companies offer some type of website builder included in their hosting plans and there are simple CMS interfaces owners can use like WordPress. There are also companies like Squarespace, Weebly, and Wix dedicated to delivering what a business owner needs to easily set up a website for a monthly fee.

If you are looking where to go to set up a business website, here’s some of what’s available.

Sending email newsletters to prospects and clients is one of the most popular uses of email marketing. Utilizing an email marketing service provider is a worthwhile way to reach potential customers and stay in contact with existing clientele. Email service providers are companies that send your newsletters and marketing message in bulk by offering an email marketing platform or software.

As examples, these are just a few of the many email service providers available. You should research what each email provider offers worthwhile solutions and tools that best fit your email messaging needs and level of coding knowledge.

• AWeber

AWeber is another email service provider that is only free to use in the beginning. Their free trial period is for 30 days, then the cost increases from $19.00 a month to $29.00, to $49.00, to $69.00, to a high of $149.00 per month before you need a quote for a list size greater than 25,000+ subscribers. AWeber’s marketing automation features are why a lot of large marketing companies like this email service provider.

• Constant Contact

Constant Contact is only free to use for the first 60 days, then the cost goes up substantially from there based on the size of your list. For example, a subscriber list of 0-500 is $20.00 a month, a list of 501-2500 is $45.00 a month and the monthly cost grows as your list reaches targeted thresholds. Constant Contact offers one of the largest free template libraries available which new email marketers like to use when first building their lists without having to learn HTML.

• Drip

Drip is popular with eCommerce businesses and they offer interfaces with both WooCommerce and WordPress platforms. Drip provides a lot of great email marketing tools to fully automate your marketing while being easy to use, but their service is also pricy starting at $41.00 a month. OUCH. What I don’t like about their website is that a business has to schedule a demo to get pricing details, while other email marketing review sites share Drip’s pricing model. I never understand marketing that places an extra step or wall in front of an interested customer who is price conscious. So that you are informed, Drip sells plans that start at $41.00 per month.

• GetResponse

GetResponse markets its platform as “marketing software for small businesses” but I think it costs too much for businesses with a small, growing list. I have personal to automate your marketing while being easy to use fully using GetResponse and many features I like about the interface, like it’s simple ability to integrate with WordPress and the site is easy to use, but the price … OUCH. GetResponse advertises a $15.00 monthly for up to 1,000 subscribers and an unlimited amount of emails, but you don’t get much in the way of bells and whistles and the tools you need for that price. You really have to start at the $49.00 a month level to access what you need and that’s pricey for a list under $5,000 subscribers. Once you purchase at the $49.00 level, you cannot downgrade your plan without leaving their service and I find their backend confusing and counterintuitive.

• iContact

iContact starts at $14.00 a month for 500 subscribers with unlimited sending and the cost increases as your list grows. A lot of small business owners like iContact because they don’t want to deal with or learn to code from scratch. iContact’s Message Builder offers users flexibility with newsletter layout and design.

• MailChimp

MailChimp is free to use up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month. This includes almost all of their features like drip automation and landing pages. MailChimp is easy to use but their basic email sign-up subscription forms and interface leave a lot to be desired. But as a simple email provider solution, it’s perfect.

Canva is a graphic-design tool website that offers a drag-and-drop format and provides access to photographs, graphics, fonts, email newsletter templates, and marketing templates. Canva for Work costs $12.95 per month. I use Canva but I often find the site speed frustrating when working with a design.

• CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor

CoffeeCup is one of my favorite services on the Internet. They offer a free HTML Editor, CSS Editor, and Quick-start Templates. The HTML Editor from CoffeeCup Software has it all! And with the free support, it is my default choice for a design editor.

• HTML Formatter

HTML Formatter is a free online tool to format an ugly HTML code, making it readable and pretty, with the proper indentation so you can check your email marketing templates once they’re complete for any mistakes or bad code.

• Litmus Community

When you join Litmus Community for free, you also receive access to free, modern HTML email templates and templates you can use for all kinds of automated marketing. The community itself is great with active email marketing discussion boards.

When I open a discussion with business owners about what kind of website content they think their potential customers would like to see, they often start with the great things they love about their company, but not why their clients come to them specifically. Try as I may to steer owners away from giving me brochure-type content for their websites, sometimes they are too afraid to deviate from the comfort zone of telling their clients who they are, instead of offering their clients solutions to their problems.

Please remember this one thing, if only this one thing about web content: The goal of your website content is to get your visitor to take action.

You want your website visitor to say yes to something on your site. Clicking forward on something on your website is the web version of visitors saying yes.

In order to engage your visitor with your content, you have to be able to tell them what’s in it for T H E M. Once you’ve hooked them by telling them how you will solve their problem, you then tell them where to click, or how to contact you immediately. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that reading a computer screen tires the eye. People read 25% more slowly on the web than they read print material. So your problem-solving web content has to be 50% shorter than print.

Let’s break web content down –

• Page Title: This should include the major keyword you want to be known for and searched by – not “Home,” “Welcome,” or “Hello.” The title should not be any longer than 60 characters, including spaces.

• Your USP: Your USP is the very essence of what you are offering to your potential customers and website visitors. Your Unique Selling Proposition needs to be so compelling that it can be used as a headline that sells your product or service on its own.

• Product or Service Description: This should be benefit-focused. You should also understand your client’s personality and what they feel comfortable with because you will want to write content that appeals to their personalities.

This is where you think like your customer and write content that answers:

What do your customers want from you?

What are your customers worried about?

Why won’t potential customers buy from you?

Benefit-focused content is all about the customer and should answer the question for them, “What will this do for me?” or “Why should I buy from you?” Feature-focused content is about your product (which can be your services) that answers the question for them, “How does your product or service operate for me?”

You must always take your features-focused content and turn it into a benefit for your customer.

Start each paragraph with a bang. Use words like “Careful,” “Warning” “Caution” – something that grabs the readers attention. Keep your paragraphs short – no more than three to four sentences per paragraph and use font size that your target customer can read. A simple list of three to five bullets or a set of headings works great for targeted content. It’s easy for your customer to read and they are more likely to pay attention to what you have written.

• Contact information: This should include telephone and electronic contact information – address and a map if you want people to visit your location. Note: If you are a business that relies on phone customers, be sure to have your phone numer at the top of every page and at the beginning of your meta description (what people see in search).

• Call To Action: Every page on your website should have a call to action – something you want your visitor to do. Do you want them to call you? Buy a product from you? Sign up for your monthly newsletter? Then tell your potential customer “What’s included” if they do what you want them to do. Make them an offer they can’t refuse.

• Use Testimonials: Always have testimonials. Always. Did I stress always?

And Remember –

Jargon is sin – don’t use it.
No “tech-speak”.
Don’t use humor unless your product or service is humor.
Don’t be afraid to offer a guarantee.
Keep it short and simple.
Images don’t sell unless you are a travel site, an art site or a direct-to-consumer product selling site.

Be sure that everything you do with your website content is geared towards achieving one thing: increasing your business.

Writing effective web content that engages your visitors may seem difficult at first, but as you work with us on the creation of your web content, it becomes easier. If you don’t understand how to successfully write effective content for your website, then I can help you by writing the content for you.

But there are two sides to online reviews and social media comments, both positive and negative, depending on what they write about your business.

And quite often the negative side is the only side where business owners focus their dismay.

Even if you fear to be on the receiving end of a negative online review or a nasty social media comment, it is still possible to turn bad reviews and spirited social media comments into a marketing tool for your company.

Consider sending surveys to your customers to thank them for being a valued client and ask them to rate their experience at your business by offering links to online review sites and social media sites where your business is listed.

Reaching out is a proactive approach for their feedback, and it offers your business another marketing opportunity to reconnect, to show how much their opinion matters to you, and a way for them to quickly post testimonials about your business online.

Being proactive with online reviews and social media comments are becoming more important as people move to mobile phone use as their primary device and utilize social media to find a business they need. Using online review sites and social media comment engagement as a marketing tool is merely smart business PR.

Positive reviews and comments are lovely but what do you do when an unhappy customer berates you or your company on a review site or social media?

My advice? Check your emotional reactions at the door. DO NOT let emotion guide you when dealing with negative online reviews and comments. Usually, the negative publicity surrounding threats of legal action taken by business owners over negative reviews further paints the business in a bad light with the general public. So does ignoring any negative reviews or unhappy social media comments.

You have to address them publically where they exist so that potential customers see that your business holds transparency in high regard. And openness translates into trust. Besides, most complaints are from people who are disappointed because they WANT TO LIKE YOUR BUSINESS and something went wrong in the process.

It’s better to calmly respond in a positive light and invite them to your place of business or to call you to further discuss the situation.

A good opening statement is:

“We are always disappointed when our [service/product/site] doesn’t measure up to what our valued customers deserve. We appreciate you letting us know. Would you be willing to talk with our customer service manager to see if we can help make this situation right with you?”

You can also use your responses as a training tool for customers. Sometimes they are mad about circumstances outside your control such as payment gateways like PayPal not working when they attempt a purchase. Or being upset because your business isn’t open during regular business hours. You can offer simple reasons why PayPal might not be working for them and provide PayPal’s contact information. You can explain why your business operates within the working hours you have chosen and offer some solutions if hours are a problem with individual customers. Always close with inviting them to contact you directly or speak with customer service on the phone.

And remember that most people just want to be heard, so listen and respond with kindness.

Just like we learned in kindergarten!

PRESS RELEASE | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dental consultants have disappointed many dentists, according to a Wealthy Dentist poll. The survey found that the majority of dentists report having had negative experiences with dental consulting. Complaints were wide-ranging: dental management consultants are overpriced, inexperienced, impersonal, or even looking for religious converts.

TIBURON, CALIFORNIA: Dec. 01, 0000: The Tumultuous Relationship Between Dentists and Dental Consultants.

Most dentists report having had at least one negative experience with a dental consultant. In a recent dental survey conducted by TheWealthyDentist.com, dentists were asked if they had been disappointed by dental consultants. The majority (62%) indicate they have had problems with consultants in the past. On the other hand, 38% report being smart and/or lucky enough to avoid the bad ones.

The survey did not differentiate between dental marketing consultants and dental management consultants, but complaints about both groups were similar. Some consultants simply lack the experience and knowledge dental practices require. “I had the experience of working with a consultant who knew nothing of accounts receivables, good ratios, etc.,” recounted a New Jersey dental office worker. “He was a podiatrist who decided to become a business consultant on the side. He should have stayed with feet.”

The cost of bad dental consulting can exceed a hefty price tag. “I paid an excessive amount to a team who guaranteed a 30% increase in production and collections, then proceeded to almost destroy my practice,” moaned a Kentucky dentist. “It has taken two years to repair the damage caused by following their ‘program.'”

Other dentists were disappointed by consultants who act as though all dental practices in all areas have the same needs for dental management consulting. “Every dentist has his or her own style, both in management and clinical skills,” said a South Carolina dentist. “Most consultants say they customize their ‘plans.’ However, they are all the same cookie-cutter ideas disguised as something different.”

Sometimes consultants can be disastrous for a dentist’s relationship with team members. “I ended up being sued by my staff… I never ever want to go to a dental consultant again,” said one Michigan dentist. A Massachusetts pediatric dentist described another unpleasant experience: “She had the staff in tears at her initial presentation. She came on like a drill sergeant to the staff within minutes of meeting them.” A North Carolina orthodontist commented, “The most recent consultant I had was very negative to my staff and did not return calls… very bad experience.”

Of course, some dentists have been delighted by their experiences with dental marketing consulting. “They absolutely turned our practice around with quality care and profitable days,” raved a Pennsylvania dental hygienist.

In the end, all agreed that it’s the dentist’s job to pick a dental practice consultant that will suit their practice. “As business owners, we must take responsibility to do due diligence when making decisions concerning our future,” said a North Carolina dentist. “We cannot become lemmings and blindly follow the ideas of a so-called expert.”

Moreover, it requires work on the dentist’s part to find the right dental management consultant. “I’ve had good experiences, but not all dental consultants’ styles or messages are right for you. Before you sign, seriously interview the consultant and have a trial period,” suggested a Connecticut dentist.

It turns out that a number of dental consultancies actually have quasi-religious affiliations; this was the most common complaint cited by dentists in this survey. (In fact, there have been a number of lawsuits on that subject.) One Arkansas dentist explains his experience: “I got invited to a teaser meeting and returned the next week to experience an aggressive attempt to humiliate me into signing on to an outrageously expensive no-end-in-sight series of coaching meetings. Not only that, it would eventually involve a religious change.”

“I’m a dental consultant myself, and have been for more years than I’d care to remember,” commented Jim Du Molin, founder of both The Wealthy Dentist and the Internet Dental Alliance. “Now, it’s possible I’m just a little biased, but I consider myself one of the good ones. And I know there are plenty of other great dental consultants out there as well. But some of the bad ones can be so monstrously bad that they scare some dentists away from the profession as a whole.”

“Very Satisfied” was how satisfied 53% of the EFT Universe newsletter subscribers feel about the weekly EFT Peak Insights newsletter.

The survey was carried out by EFT Universe staff, based on a template provided by Survey Monkey, an online survey development cloud-based company.

“Somewhat Satisfied” was the response by 31% of the respondents with 8% feeling “Neutral” about the weekly newsletter.

Only 4% of the survey respondents felt “Somewhat Dissatisfied” while another 4% cited “Other.”

Why Offer a Newsletter at All?

The purpose of the EFT Universe Insights Newsletter is to stay intimately connected to the EFT community and let subscribers know what is happening at EFT Universe. According to a Pew Internet Survey, almost 9 in 10 adults go online to check email, more often than they shop online or visit social-media sites, so it is a great way to stay connected to a loyal fan base.

People who are interested in EFT enjoy learning more about energy psychology and sharing their EFT experiences, and the newsletter provides this for them.

EFT Universe GM, Heather Montgomery, said the popularity of the EFT Universe weekly newsletter is because subscribers like seeing the updates from Dawson Church, the recent EFT announcements and reading the shared EFT success stories that EFT trainers, EFT practitioners, and EFT fans devote their personal time and effort to writing and then submitting these stories to be shared in the newsletter for free.

“The EFT weekly newsletter is the best way to stay informed about upcoming EFT workshops and events, EFT modalities, tapping groups, changes in EFT Universe, special announcements, and upcoming special offers. Each edition includes links to help subscribers send us feedback or unsubscribe which, we feel, lets the subscriber know that we care about what they see from us,” commented general manager, Heather Montgomery.

69% of the survey respondents read the entire newsletter every single week.

Founder and best-selling author, Dawson Church of EFT Universe, commented that he feels enormous gratitude for the high number of people who read the newsletter in its entirety each week. 15% of EFT Universe newsletter subscribers read the newsletter at least twice a month, while 4% read it only once a month. “I feel grateful that people take the time to read the newsletter since so many hours of dedicated work go into creating the newsletter each week,” Dawson noted.

We also asked respondents to rate the different sections of the weekly EFT Insights newsletter.

The NUMBER 1 SECTION that respondents love the most is the new story submissions in the “THIS WEEK’S EFT STORY SUBMISSIONS” section.

Number 2 is the “EFT STORIES FROM THE EFT UNIVERSE LIBRARY” section.

Number 3 is Dawson’s lead story each week.

Number 4 is the “SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS” section where we announce contests, giveaways, upcoming EFT workshops, new EFT practitioner publications, and exciting stories Dawson finds around the Internet.

Respondent demographic breakdown:

Does gender play a role in the responses?

• 75% – Female
• 25% – Male

How about location?

• 49% – United States
• 23% – Canada
• 12% – UK
• 10% – SA
• 06% – Other

For more insight into what our respondents are thinking, check out their comments!

• “I like the newsletter, but I would like to see the weekly newsletter cover more scientific research and more in-depth coverage of different ways to use EFT techniques and leave the selling in a different newsletter. Maybe the other newsletter could be touted as a way to bring more income to EFT Universe to expand the reach of EFT, thus we are better prepared for the marketing.

• “I read the newsletter looking for the stories from EFT practitioners and how they use EFT in their practices.”

• “I enjoy reading the newsletter best when Dawson shares his knowledge.”

• “I’d like to see monthly interviews (maybe the first newsletter of each month) with people prominent in the energy psychology field and what they are currently working on. For example, someone could interview Dawson about what he is currently working on (like a book, a program, a workshop, being a keynote speaker at a major event, etc.) and talk about his process and when he expects completion. This way, if it is a program of his, we get the backstory before it’s ready for purchase. Or even an interview with several prominent EFT Masters over a hot topic like the shootings and what they would like to see change, or how EFT can help.”

• “I would like to read more about pain, illness, and diseases that are emotionally-based. Based on the works of Dr. John Sarno, Dr. Hamer of German New Medicine, Christian Fleche, Gilbert Renaud to name a few.”

• “More ‘why’ in the lead newsletter story – why Dawson or EFT Universe has chosen to support someone or a product in the newsletter.”

• “I’d like more transparency. This survey is a good start.”

• “I like the weekly newsletter and I wish you would offer more giveaways – like books, programs, or EFT-based products like coffee mugs, calendars, wristbands, t-shirts, etc.”

• “I am really grateful for the newsletters, I always find something new and ideas for what I need to tap on. Thank you!”

• “Perhaps interviews with some of the other early adopters and leading lights. How has their perspective changed on EFT? What is their focus now? Have they broken any new ground?”

• “One site/newsletter/survey for those interested in the science and uses of EFT, and another for those interested in faith-based, non-measurable topics and the sales organizations that promote it.”

• “More EFT and the brain and EFT and trauma.”

• “Your EFT newsletter is the best newsletter I get in my email!”

• “A newsletter with EFT for athletes and sports performance.”

• “I’d read anything research-related, advances in EFT and the science behind EFT. It’s the most welcome and an extremely valuable resource.”

• “A section in the newsletter with more information about how to get certified in EFT with easy payment options. This would be nice.”

• “I’ve seen many articles related to performance in sports, but I haven’t seen any regarding artists’ performance (may I have missed them…) but as I an artist (singer/songwriter/musician) I would read more about this type of topic. I’m sure there are lots of artists out there who face important roadblocks in their creativity and performance. Many thanks!”

• “I’d like to see: 1. An article indicating a “wow”, or surprising/unexpected result from an EFT Session with an International flavor. 2. An EFT-related Competition/Quiz!”

We love feedback and want to thank everyone who was kind enough to contribute to this survey. We received many responses and input on what both are working and not working for our EFT fans.

Thank you.

For anyone who has ever been a job applicant, you know what a challenging experience the process can be with having to tweak cover letters and resumes, track the application process, wait-wait-wait, and then comes the interview marathon.

How a company interacts with an applicant during this process says a lot about the company culture and many business owners don’t give a second thought to their hiring methodology.

It’s a shame too because they are probably making one big business marketing mistake.

I have always believed HR should fall under the marketing department at any business and the hiring process should be handled much in the same way as an advertising campaign or a product launch.

You might think this is crazy, but hear me out.

Too many valuable people are being laid waste during the out-of-touch hiring processes that fail to see all applicants as possible future great employees, next product or service customers, or business networking referrals. Too often, the handling of the hiring process gets treated as a one-time event, a yes-or-no situation.

BOOM. Done.

Interacting with applicants just as “applicants” is a business marketing mistake that may be costing you in the long run.

Companies should handle applicants like they regard customers–hopefully with some reverence, respect, and desire to know more about them. You never know who an applicant knows, is related to, or where they may end up working.

Too many businesses behave as if obtaining an interview is the applicants lucky day, instead of looking at this first meeting as an opportunity to get to know someone new who is so interested in the company they are willing to sit for an interview. I don’t care what the resume looks like or how they are not the right fit–if they were a potential customer, how would this change your first interaction?

Let me offer an example.

An applicant sends a company a resume. Then hears nothing. One might believe that the company isn’t interested. Why is this left to interpretation and guesswork? If a customer emailed you, would you answer them? So why isn’t an autoresponder email sent to all applicants? With all of the automation software at our fingertips, it boggles my mind that adding applicants to an autoresponder funnel series is not the standard.

Here, businesses have a perfect opportunity to talk with a stranger about what the company does and thank an applicant for their interest in working for the firm. Autoresponders can be used to point applicants to items of interest on a website and invite them to follow on social media.

An effective autoresponder list segmentation is separating the top applicants from those with resumes that don’t have the right skills at the present moment. An autoresponder to the disqualified applicants could direct this list to an HR page detailing what background and skills are best and invite them to sign up on an HR mailing list for future job openings or any marketing newsletters.

The top applicants should receive an autoresponder informing them of what to expect next in the hiring process. Tell them a bit more about company perks, like vacation and medical benefits. Offer a timeframe of what length to plan for the hiring process. I’ve seen companies take three months to decide on a candidate only to have their favorite candidate go to the competition because the hiring process took longer than what the applicant expected. If hiring is going to take three months and require three interviews–tell the best applicants in your first autoresponder.

It’s a simple act of kindness to acknowledge the receipt of an application or a job inquiry. The businesses who treat applicants like future customers will create evangelists who forever view the company in a positive light–even if they don’t advance to the interview stage.

I have seen a few great companies create website portals for applicants to upload resumes and periodically update their information on file, so the HR department has a database of applicants. Even at this level of interaction, it is rare that HR adds these applicants to an autoresponder to keep in regular contact. The beginning of each month, these applicants should receive an HR company update with a list of new positions currently available.

If you run a business and you think you don’t have the time to execute an autoresponder campaign for applicants, you are wrong.

The initial setup may take you a little bit of time, but once you have the autoresponders in place, they become very simple to manage. And for small businesses, it’s essential to embrace everyone who contacts you because you never know from where the next significant opportunity will come.

I knew a small business owner known around town for how awful he treated young people who’d walk into his business to ask for a job application. He’d become irritated and he’d act short-tempered with them–never following through on calling any of them. One young man went on to become a favorite professional athlete who never recommended this small business owner’s business. This small business could have significantly benefited from his recommendation. Ultimately, he went out of business, and a lot of people in the area were not sorry to see him go under because of the way he had treated young people asking about a job. Think of the parents, grandparents, cousins, friends, teachers, and coaches who heard the same application story over and over. Imagine if this owner had merely taken the time to come up with a natural process for people to apply and pick up applications where he didn’t have to be disturbed?

He never looked at those young people as potential customers. I believe this is one of the main reasons why his business failed.

One of my favorite marketing mantras is “Make Wise Use of Everything.” I am surprised at the number of businesses who don’t look at their application process as a marketing opportunity and treat it as such–to make wise use of the application interaction. Every single interaction with a stranger is an opportunity. It’s not difficult for a company to shine at the beginning of a hiring process. And if I hear one more manager say to be that they get “too many applicants” and this is impossible to execute, then I want them to turn to their marketing person or sales team and say, “I have 970 potential customer emails sitting out there that I am too busy to handle.” Watch their heads spin. Trust me; someone would find a way to add those applicant emails to a list and create an automated system for handling them in the future.

As we like to say in marketing, “It’s all in how THEY look at it.” Make your applicants rave about your company even if they don’t get an interview. Don’t make the business marketing mistake of not responding well to an inquiry. They will talk about you on their social media platforms and share their experience with family and friends, and every single time they see the logo or something about the company in the news.

It estimated that on average 250 resumes are received for each corporate job opening. (Source ERE) Just imagine if every single one of them referred business to the companies that treated them well from the very first email. Think about the fact that people tell an average of 9 people about good experiences, and warn 16 (nearly two times more) people about poor experiences. (Source: AE Research Survey) Multiply these numbers by the long arm of social media, and you can see why a company’s hiring style is also a place to create a significant business marketing opportunity.
